Tip: Word 2013: Apply number format to a control text box (SharePoint document template)

I read this blog post (http://www.davescomputertips.com/format-currency-in-ms-word) because I was building a template that was using fields linked with a content type in SharePoint and I needed to apply a format to a numeric column.

The problem was that the method described in the post applied to legacy fields, and SharePoint columns are inserted to Word as controls.

The work around I found was as follows (part of the text borrowed from Carol Bratt see link above):

  1. Place your cursor in the location you want to insert the column in word.

  2. Click CTRL + F9 to insert a pair of field braces. This is the only way to do it. You cannot enter the braces manually. It will not work.

  3. Inside the braces, write this: =999 \# “$#,##0.00;($#,##0.00)”. so it looks like this:

  1. Click Shift + F9 to collapse your field.
  2. Right-click above the location (even though you don’t see it) and select update field.

Now the part where you insert the Control for the SharePoint column:

  1. Press Shift + F9 again above the field you just created, so you return to:

  1. Delete the number 999 and with the mouse placed after the equal sign, insert the column from SharePoint (Insert/Quick parts/Document property—etc.). It now should like this:

  1. Click Shift + F9 to collapse your field.
  2. Right-click above the location (even though you don’t see it the new format) and select update field.

I'm a person of big ambitions, but takes care of small details. As an entrepreneur I have learned to value people that surrounds me and invest in their wealth. Living in a big chaotic city has been an inspiration for ideas to make working from home a viable option. From some years, until now, I have discovered that sharing my knowledge is a way to feel good and at the same time, receive more. I have invested in a headhunting company specialized in information technology, an elearning content production company and an outsourcing administrative services company.
